Milton Village Vet caters for all aspects of preventative companion animal healthcare including vaccinations, microchips and SR12 heartworm and Bravecto Quantum injections. Our fully qualified staff can also offer professional advice on the best tick and flea preventatives for the area, gastrointestinal worming, dietary supplements and nutritional advice for specific medical problems or weight loss for your furry best friend.

We offer an advanced range of in-house diagnostic services for most medical issues including but not limited to arthritis/lameness, cardiovascular and respiratory disease, gastrointestinal disease, skin or dermatological disorders including allergies, hormonal disease, infectious disease and skin or internal cancers [oncology]. We have in-house biochemistry analysers for immediate point-of-care results, microscopy for cytology and fine needle aspirate biopsies, Vetus E7 Mindray advanced ultrasound machine and digital x-ray machines for both dentistry and whole-of-body use. We even utilise platelet-rich plasma for regenerative medicine and a cold laser for photobiomodulation [useful for pain, healing and inflammation relief]. Our external specialist lab providers, Vetnostics, pickup twice daily for more advanced pathology tests including PCR testing, endocrine testing and histopathology.

Routine surgeries such as castrations, ovariohysterectomies and dental scale/polishes +/- extractions are performed weekdays. The hospital is equipped with digital dental x-ray and an IM3 LED dental unit and scaler. The hospital has three Advanced Anaesthetic Specialists mobile Stinger units and each has its own anaesthetic monitoring unit capable for temperature, blood oxygen/heart-rate/resp rate, capnography [expired CO2 monitoring], blood pressure and ECG. Most surgical cases are placed on an intravenous fluid pump and often have bloodwork done prior. Postoperatively we use multi-modal pain relief strategies and warm air blanket systems to ensure their recovery is as pain-free and safe as possible. Dr Matt has his memberships [Australian College of Veterinary Scientists] in small animal surgery and he has a keen interest in soft tissue [gastrointestinal, wound reconstruction especially after cancer removal utilising skin grafts or advanced axial pattern skin flaps] and orthopaedics including fractures, tendon/ligament injuries and the advanced cranial cruciate ligament repair utilising the Tibial Tuberosity Advancement or TTA system of titanium implants].

When your pet needs them most, we have both the critical care facilities and the know how to keep them safe. Whether it is a dog fight, motor vehicle accident, anaphylaxis, tick or snake envenomation, acute collapse or a neurological emergency we are ready to go. Equipment includes three AAS Stinger advanced anaesthetic machines, intranasal oxygen, intravenous fluid pumps, syringe pumps, Vetscan biochemistry machines, pulse oximetry, capnography, non invasive blood pressure and pulse doppler machines, ECG, digital radiology and Mindray Vetus E7 advanced ultrasound machine with Zonare componentry and two active warming machines. We stock tick and multivalent snake antivenoms to cover the most common elapid snakes in the region [Red Belly Black, Brown and Tiger snakes]. All emergencies are seen immediately and there is no need to make an appointment, call us on approach so we can get PREPARED.

The hospital is equipped with a high-powered Porta 120 high-frequency generator X-ray unit and Fujifilm Prima T2 digital processor for imaging of the abdomen, thorax or musculoskeletal system. We have recently acquired an advanced Vetus E7 Mindray ultrasound unit for abdominal and thoracic soft tissue imaging and a handheld Remex T100 dental x-ray unit and Fire CR for dental-specific imaging and the odd bird wing or leg. More advanced CT and MRI imaging can be organised via specialist referral.

The deadly Australian paralysis tick or Ixodes holocyclus is prevalent in the region and year-round effective prevention is strongly recommended for all companion cats and dogs. We recommend the isoxazoline family of preventatives as the older Frontline, Advantix or any number of collars just do not work reliably. For dogs this means either Nexgard, Simparica, Credelio or our fave Bravecto [it works for longer] and for cats its either Bravecto, Nexgard or Revolution plus. We have never had a breakthrough, meaning, that a pet never becomes paralysed when using one of these products correctly but if you have unfortunately forgotten or thought it was ok to stop over winter [NB it is not!] and your pet becomes tick affected we base our all our recommendations on the consensus statement made by 14 veterinary experts in tick paralysis called the Guideline for the Management, Treatment and Prevention of Australian Tick Paralysis of Dogs and Cats in 2014 and updated in 2020 and is available online for you to read as well.

Dr Matt and Dr Chloe have a keen interest in behavioural medicine and work closely with a local Delta-accredited behavioural trainer Becky Emans [www.bestbehaviour.net]. Behavioural problems are the most common cause of breakdown of the pet/owner bond, relinquishment or euthanasia in younger companion animals. Prevention starts early ensuring you find a pet that has been raised in a caring and supportive breeder/carer environment then socialised appropriately from 8 to 20 weeks of age including puppy school. Behavioural problems include conditioned over-arousal, reactivity, noise sensitivity, separation anxiety and fear and anxiety which often results in overt aggression. Like most diseases prevention is far better than the cure but if you find you are struggling with your pet’s behaviour and something does not feel right then we are here to help with modern behavioural medicine and operant conditioning techniques that are evidence-based. Dr Matt is on the Australian Veterinary Behavioural Medicine [AVBM] executive committee and is their representative on the Australian Veterinary Associations Policy Advisory Council.

We offer routine desexing of rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets using specialised anaesthetic circuits. Dr Caitlin has a special interest in avian medicine and surgery including the humble Aussie chook. We work closely with Wandandian Roo Sanctuary and local wildlife carers triaging, stabilising, diagnosing and treating our many beautiful and unique birds, reptiles and marsupials. Like all vets we donate our time, facilities, medicine and surgery time to helping native wildlife at no cost . Both Dr Carrie and Caitlin have both done the Taronga Wildlife Course since the black summer bushfires to help the clinic be better prepared for future emergencies.
